Before & After

The design idea for this Master Bath renovation focuses on new definition and enhancement of an existing bathroom space. This Bathroom had developed worn out materials over the many years of use. Maintenance and safety became some real concerns. It was time to remedy this with updates designed for better functionality, general maintenance, comfort and safety all around.

The Shower was like a cave due to its configuration, lack of light and proper ventilation. We reconfigured the entry into the shower, and took out a small portion of the wall overhead. This immediately opened up and “borrowed” light from an existing arched opening. We added a Panasonic recessed LED Can/Light fixture for light and ventilation, and another recessed LED can light at the entry to the shower.

We have grab-bar blocking in the shower walls for future grab-bar installations, plus added a fold down teak bench. The Kohler HydroRail shower fixture was perfect for this, as a retrofit and connects right into where the existing water connection was. The volume control is conveniently located as you enter in, and not under the water spray. A linear drain was designed and offset at the wall, to avoid standing on a (traditional) centered metal grate with various slopes, as you enjoy your shower experience.

The Kohler undermount Bathtub features massage water jets and a sloped back for more comfort. The tub deck and “waterfall” front face is Cambria quartz Torquay, with a matching Vanity countertop. The tub deck allows the bather to sit down on the wide ledge first, (rather than stepping over it), then can swing the legs over, and lower oneself into the tub. Grab-bar blocking is in the side wall for future use.

The Vanity features painted white raised panel cabinetry with matching mirror frame, pullout trays at the sinks, a door mounted hair dryer storage unit. LED strip lighting placed at the toe-kick lights the way to the toilet room at night.

The Floor was a dramatic improvement, as we replaced the carpeting with large 24” square grey tiles that compliment the Cambria quartz. We also added a floor heat system for extra warmth.

A beautiful green glass mosaic tile was added around the tub and on the shower walls, for a nice accent, bringing some of the outdoors in!

before & after

A few simple design ideas can have a dramatic impact in a dark bathroom. The functionality of a bathing area can be greatly improved with space reconfiguration, new materials and lighting fixture selections.

materials & finishes

  • Creamy large 18” square Happy Floors tiles help open and lighten the space.

  • For the shower, a new LED light and smooth, soft, flat-cut pebble mosaic tile from Dal-Tile, in multi-toned creams and grays were selected for the floor to complete our coastal theme. These tiles, by the way are also nice on the feet!

  • Vanity top is set with Cambria quartz Oakmoor, a very stunning wave-like pattern with soft taupes on a creamy background, reminiscent of a sandy beach and coastal theme. Dark brown stained doors and door fronts are refaced with a medium toned taupe stain. Kohler Verdera LED vanity mirrors, on dimmers, provide a functional solution to the vanity lighting problem.

  • Chrome finish Kohler Purist plumbing fixtures and accessories were selected for a contemporary feel and contrast.

Beauty + Safety!

Planning a bathroom update? Think about grab bars & wall mounted benches ... before you get started!

Within the past few years, the design of grab bars has been transformed from an institutional look, to one of elegance with dual purpose functionality. Some examples are shown below: Corner Soap Shelves, Toilet Paper Holders, Towel Bars, Shower Control Accent Rings and grab bars with rubber grips. A wide variety of bathing benches are also available in wall mounted and free-standing models that provide an important safety function with a beautiful spa look.

Whether or not these features will become part of your current renovation, you may want to consider blocking and strengthening specific sections of the bathing area while walls are opened for construction - so they can be located and added easily at a later date.

before & after

This Master Bath project focuses on ideas for better functionality and safety to suit changing needs and mobility issues. This was successfully accomplished by removing a tall, obsolete tub and enlarging the bathing area with a curb-less shower. A new vanity is designed to hold an easy access hamper and trash drawer, with LED lighting added at the vanity toe-kick for a night light. Heated floors, including the shower floor - add coziness and warmth for this 140 sq. ft space. No more throw rugs! The new entry is wider, with a sliding barn style door for much better access.
